:: Couchepin: "Blocher's attitude is a danger to our democracy"

I'm linking to the NZZ article because I like what Mr Couchepin has to say about the swiss democracy and how he views them. He points out that we do not live in a radical democracy (a quick history lesson: The most famous democracy we know, the one in classical Athens, was one):

Er [Blocher] sagt immer, das Volk sei der Souverän. Das ist falsch: Das Volk ist der Ursprung, die Quelle der Macht. Es hat das letzte Wort. Zwischen Wahlen stehen aber auch die anderen Staatsgewalten in der Verantwortung.

After all, it's the government's job to govern. I also like what Mr Couchepin says about the power of the people:

Wir sind überzeugt davon, dass das Volk kein Diktator sein darf. Deshalb braucht man auch nicht zu schweigen, wenn es gesprochen hat.

So, Mr Couchepin, the wisdom of attacking Mr Blocher might be debatable (though I wish you luck), but what you said about the swiss democracy sounded better to me than what he tried to sell last Sunday.
